7 months Old

He is growing up so fast. We are hoping that his reflux will clear up in the next few months so he doesn't have to have surgery to fix it :( He had to go into Primary Children's a week ago and be put under so the GI specialist could look at his esophagus, bowels, stomach, take a small piece of tissue out and put a 24 hour probe down his nose. The probe was to monitor the pH levels in his stomach throughout a 24 hour period. It was not enjoyable not even for a second. It was probably the worst two days since he was in the NICU/Special care. We were really impressed with Primary Children's when we went up for his barium swallow, but this experience was awful. It reminded me of when I was at Utah Valley after I had Brinley. They were so busy with other patients and children that the care was not quality at all. It was so bad in fact that Shad pretty much yelled at one of the nurses. He had to make sure she heard him over a screaming baby :) When Breckin was coming out of anesthesia he just cried and cried. I am not sure why they forgot to take an x-ray of the probe to make sure it was placed right before he left recovery, but they did. So, instead of letting us feed him (he hadn't eaten for over 12 hours at this point) they made us wait in our room with a screaming baby while we had to wait for an x-ray room to open. He cried through the entire x-ray process and then they made us wait until the doctor cleared the x-ray for him to eat. Poor guy was struggling. When we finally were cleared to feed him I realized we had not been told whether or not to give him his meds. I asked the nurse and she told me that he needed to take them, but I couldn't give him mine. They had to use medicine from their pharmacy. I was told earlier that I could use the meds I had brought. Anyway, after he had calmed down some. I realized no one told me what I needed to do for his probe. When I asked the nurse for help she rolled her eyes. I couldn't believe it. After I finally was able to get someone to show me what I needed to do I watched his probe like a hawk. I noticed that his ph didn't show him having acid reflux especially at night when he was the worst. The nurses said that he had a slight fever that night but it magically disappeared that morning which I thought was strange. During the night we were woken up by the night nurse who was searching our garbage frantically for diapers. They were suppose to be weighing the diapers and hadn't been. She was lucky to find two diapers since housekeeping took the other ones earlier. When we came home I did some research on the side effects of the medicine he was taking. Low and behold some of the side effects included; stomach pain, insomnia, low grade fever and others. I had a feeling I needed to take him off the medication. Since we wouldn't hear back from the doctor for days I wasn't about to make Breckin suffer for it. The night I took him of the meds he only woke up once. He has had some off nights, but for the most part he seems to be doing a lot better. We did get a call from the doctor saying that Breckin is having a large amount of non-acidic reflux and to stay on the meds and if it doesn't clear up they want to do surgery. I told the Dr. that he isn't going the take the meds anymore and why. After I told him why he started to back track. I don't know if he has any clue what is really going on because one of the medications they had Breckin on caused the reflux to be not as acidic, but it wouldn't stop the reflux. The other medication was suppose to help stop the reflux, but I found out it can cause more episodes of non-acidic reflux. Anyway, we are going to wait until he is one or older to see if he is still having problems. I am not about to let him have surgery unless it is absolutely necessary.

Here are some fun facts about our little Breckles:

-He is sooo super duper happy
-He is such a good baby, mellow and low key
-He can wave hi when he chooses and it just melts us when he does it!
-He says dadda...I try to get him to say mamma, but he will say dadda and laugh (little stinker)
-We don't have another check-up scheduled for him until next month, but he weighs just under 20lbs last time he was weighed at Primary Children's. He will be in a front facing car seat soon!
-He loves to watch football with dad and he will stare, no joke at the girls, you are a little young for that Breckie :)
-The one person who can make him smile and laugh more than anyone is his sister!
-We sure love you, you handsome boy!!!
